It is best to start moulding children’s behaviour and character from a tender young age because their habits are not fixed yet and their youthfulness makes them more amenable. Therefore, making New Year’s resolutions from an early age is a great idea to develop firm habits and lasting values as they grow up. It is important for their parents to gently guide them step by step and to make the process of fulfilling resolutions fun for them as well. Here we recommend 8 New Year’s resolutions your child can adopt.
1. Eat more fruits and veggies each week.
Getting your child to eat more fruits and vegetables could be tiresome if your little one dislikes greens. However, you could encourage them to take on this challenge by emphasizing on a big reward at the end of the year if they fulfilled it. Make sure the reward is fun and worthwhile to them. Their reward could be the new toy they have always wanted.
2. Learn a musical instrument.
Learning to play music provides many benefits such as improving academic skills and motor skills. However, the process of learning music itself could be frustrating as children may often feel demotivated to practice. You can motivate them to practice by turning it into a rewarding activity, for example, setting a short daily musical goal such as practicing a quarter of a song without making any mistakes. The feeling of accomplishment from achieving small goals each day would lead to more motivation.
3. Make more friends.
Socializing is an essential skill to learn from a young age and one which we will need to continue refining all our lives. Having friends helps enrich lives and provides a source of moral support. Ensure that you constantly remind your child about sharing and being polite so they will make and keep friends more easily. For children with more difficulty in making friends, parents could try practicing simple everyday conversations with them to improve their social skills.
4. Practice makes perfect.
Parents would naturally want their child to do well in school and this resolution is a sure-fire way to achieve that. To excel in studies, constant practice is a must. An effective way to tackle this is to make sure you always monitor your child while they do school exercises and temporarily remove distractions such as television or games.
5. Read more books in a month.
Developing a habit of reading from an early age helps to flourish young children’s minds. A child who reads regularly learns at a faster pace, leading to better academic success. In order to encourage your child to read, you have to be a role model in reading yourself. Your child will want to start reading if they see you reading as well. Another approach is reading to your child daily to instill a love for reading in them.
6. Be a better listener.
Raising your child to be a better listener plays a crucial role for their personal and social lives. Good communication includes good listening skills, leading to better relationships built throughout their lives. One simple way to teach them about listening is making eye contact at their level and telling them clearly that you need their attention for a while. Simply raising your voice all the time would result in them tuning you out eventually.
7. Start exercising more
Research shows that many children these days spend an average of 7 hours per day on TV, computer, phones and other electronic devices. That is why developing an active lifestyle is necessary to maintain their health. Find a fun sport your child enjoys and make it a regular family activity. This is a great way to make exercise exciting while spending valuable time together.
8. Be kind to others
Kids are naturally inclined to be kind and it is our duty to encourage this side of them so it becomes a lifelong value. Show kindness in front of your child as much as you can and they will follow by example. Involve them in opportunities to do kind acts for others and then ask them how it feels to brighten someone’s day. This will always remind them about how good it feels to help others.
